The paradox of tolerance is the perfect excuse to become extremist in your beliefs. amirite?
by Adept-Ambition39331 week ago
If you believe tolerance is extremist I guess Obviously the point is to prevent intolerance (extremism) from taking over

But who defines intolerance? What if I think A is just a dumb take, but you think it's a form of intolerance? Do we not tolerate it?

Ah, no. The tolerance paradox has nothing to do with 'wrong' opinions. It has to do with.... intolerant beliefs. And it doesn't justify 'extremelist' views unless you're describing standing up to intolerance as extremist. Which it isn't.

When I am tolerant towards someone's (B) intolerance towards other people's (C) intolerance, am I tolerant or intolerant? And for you to answer the question "Who's tolerance/intolerance is justified?" faithfully do you need to know which is the 'wrong' opinion?

You're wrong about what the paradox of tolerance is. It's not people with wrong opinions that can't be tolerated, it's people with intolerant opinions that can't be tolerated. It's not a difference of opinion it's about people expressing opinions rooted in hate.

We've heard it a hundred trillion times from right-wingers. You won't tolerate my anti-LGBT beliefs? Well, my religion informs my bigotry. You're the real bigot! And, if you were to say, "well, you kind of have a point there," that's the paradox of tolerance. You have acquiesced to intolerance in the name of tolerance.

The paradox of tolerance has to do with actual extremist views, not people with opposing viewpoints. The paradox of intolerance doesn't have room for nuance or semantics, it is not referring to Judy who thinks children shouldn't be allowed at weddings. It has to do with Rick who thinks we should bring back Jim Crowe era laws on black people. It is against clearly bigoted and INTOLERANT views that any 12 year old with a computer can rationalize as intolerant. The paradox is by allowing those views to perpetuate we turn a blind eye to the people who are causing harm to society.

True but I could live with this rule if people where at least consitent. But everyone love to be an ass and feels justified to do so.

Try not starting off with misrepresenting the thing you're bitching about if you want to be taken seriously.

Claiming that this is an unpopular opinion insinuates that the inverse is a popular opinion. That's silly.

I don't think you quite get it at all here

I feel the same way! Anytime someone else's opinion is silenced whether that be through verbal or physical force you're creating a society that lives in one extreme where the best place to live is actually in the middle. I don't think it's so much of people with wrong opinions should are tolerated, but that we live in a society currently where we don't want to offend others, and it's gone to such an extreme that now if a fact is brought up that dispel the wrong opinion, name-calling is resorted to instead of valid counterpoint.
