+15 For a permanent colony on Mars, pottery will be a unique and profitable export. amirite?

Because there's a lot of dust around there that resembles clay? It would be easier to transport that in bulk and make the pottery on earth, since energy and water would be limited resources on Mars, plus pottery is fragile and takes up a lot more space to transport.

More of a novelty of the red martial soil and the fact that people will pay a lot of money for something exotic. I can see rich people paying hundreds or thousands of dollar for a bowl from Mars for example.

by Classic-Package-8929 1 week ago

It would probably cost a lot more than that, but yes, they would!

Alien 1 "what are the humans using Mars for" Alien 2 'well that one took some dust and made a toilet with it" Alien 1 " 👽

You gotta get the bulk shipping discounts. 😆

Before steamships, you used to be able to impress your friends by having things from far away, but that hasn't really been a thing for the last couple hundred years. Having a vase or plates from Mars is going to be a huge flex.

a bowl from Mars for example. I think you mean a bowl of Mars

by Maleficent-Koala3452 1 week ago

Too bad it might cost millions.

Thanks!

Yeah likely made from the dirt around the grand canyon, I imagine that would be perfect counterfeit material. Of course upon microscopic inspection you'd see bacteria that wouldn't be present in Martian soil

Mass spectrometry analysis would likely be able to differentiate the general source of the soil/clay.

by Classic-Package-8929 1 week ago

But ceramics from Mars would be different than ceramics made from Mars clay on earth.

Would you like a glass of genuine Saturn ice ring water? We can drink it from these mugs I got from Mars.

Prefer Titan Whiskey myself.

by Classic-Package-8929 1 week ago

I'd try some of that

Better than baked beans from Uranus.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I heard Uranus has a really profitable natural Lube industry.

Uh, why? Transporting it would cost WAY more than it is worth. Mars colony would likely have no real exports and be entirely dependent on supplies from Earth.

I mean Elon put his car into space If cost is the only factor, it's pretty much guaranteed to happen eventually

by Anonymous 1 week ago

The assumption is that 1. Transport cost will decrease over time and 2. Rich people will pay a lot of money to make it worth it at some point.

by Classic-Package-8929 1 week ago

Definitely going to start investing in the industry in 2188

by Anonymous 1 week ago

not even worth to transport it back

Can pottery be made out of the red soil though? Pretty sure its toxic rust.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

If there is profit to be made, people will find a way.

by Classic-Package-8929 1 week ago

I find it interesting that NASA is considering implementing 3D printers that use the red soil material as a base for building habitants.

Philip K Dick had an obsession with pottery, and liked Mars. he would love to hear this.

If you're willing to pay a few hundred million for a piece of pottery I guess
