+58 The James Bond films need go back to the silliness of the Moore era. amirite?

by predovicdell 1 week ago

Not gonna lie, and this is also an unpopular opinion, but Roger Moore is my favorite Bond. Whenever the movies are streaming, my son and I like to watch them, he also prefers the Roger Moore films. I'm a fan of (almost) all of them, but the Roger Moore ones are the best. Like OP said, they're fun and an escape. They're not too gritty (Craig), they're not too corny (Brosnan), they're not as problematic under the lens of a different age (Connery), and they're not too dark (Dalton). They're right where they should be.

Moore is my favorite Bond too.

by ParsnipLeading 1 week ago

I agree and with that the correct actor for that theme of bond would be Henry Cavill.

Are the connery movies problematic?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I'm not Mr. Uber Liberal or anything, but they have their moments of sexism and racism at times.

by Kyler21 1 week ago

How about returning to the silliness of the Connery or Brosnan era instead? Those two, at least in the good entries, struck a much better balance between tongue-in-cheek elements and also keeping Bond himself legitimately cool. Roger Moore's films went way too far into camp in the last several, all while he was playing the role at like 86 years old.

I saw all the Brosnan movies in the theater, and I really enjoyed them. I think those movies were well done.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Moore packed the seats. And the fact they kept Moore at an old age means they probably wouldn't have replaced him.

by ParsnipLeading 1 week ago

No, that's too far. The Brosnan ones were just corny. I'd like to at least have some level of believability in the movies going forward, and I'm mostly refering to the characters themselves. The Bond movies can be fun, but the Brosnan ones feel more like parody.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Agreed. Brosnan movies kinda feel like a fanfic now, really.

I did love Skyfall

by Emergency_Fee180 1 week ago

Yeah, I mean it goes a bit deeper by saying Moore in particular. But that the Craig movies where to serious and gritty (and maybe a little too PC) is a pretty damn cold take

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I don't think it was realism which were the problem with the Craig movies, I think they took themselves far too serious. Licence to Kill was a serious and realistic movie, but wasn't taking itself too seriously. But maybe it only seems to be this way, as it is 1 movie vs 5 in a row.

by North_Text 1 week ago

License to Kill always seemed more like a Miami Vice two part season opener than a Bond film to me.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

yep because john wick with his bullet proof tuxedo was very realistic

by Anonymous 1 week ago

But not silly

by Anonymous 1 week ago

him falling from like 50 flights of stairs and being alright and climbing up them again was pretty silly.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

If you want camp and goofy go watch a marvel movie.

by TermEntire965 1 week ago

I second that. Tired of "grit" in films.

by Garnethickle 1 week ago

Agreed. My favorite parts of those movies were the introduction and usage of the gadgets and the cool ass car that would always eventually get destroyed. Without that it's just a typical action movie.

I feel the same for Batman - the Tim Burton era was great!

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Batman too. Enough with the "trauma / childhood wounds".

by FitChocolate282 1 week ago

Cannonball Run was sillier

by Anonymous 1 week ago

i very much miss the days of pierce brosnan restrained to a chair with a bolt that was going to sever his spinal column, while a high powered laser was inching closer to his junk, because a super villan needed information.

by Aware_Gur 1 week ago

I think the best Bonds were the Michael Myers ones because of the silliness

Take your slide whistle and GTFO

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Try the original casino royale

by wernerlebsack 1 week ago

I forget who said it, but, there's a Bond director who said the existence of Austin Powers ruined doing Bond silly.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Different take: we can make quirky spy films without slapping Bond on the title. "The Man from UNCLE" was one of my favourite spy films in recent years and it was independent of any franchise.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

They should be like the books.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I'm sorry but I don't need Clown Bond, slide whistle stunts, some of the dumbest most obnoxious Bond Girls and inflation kills in my Bond. I mean you do you but I'm good

by kendra52 1 week ago

Bond was cool when it was dumber.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Agreed. We lost Wackiness as a society in the early 2000s (the internet killed it)

by Waelchirahul 1 week ago

Why do you think that internet killed it?

by Terrible_Draft 1 week ago

I don't know. For me, only Craig Bond movies aged well.

by Terrible_Draft 1 week ago

You're looking for the campy/corny aspect of it that was mostly lost with that stone faced, pug nosed Daniel Craig. Was he a cooler bond? Honestly, I don't think so. He was more serious but had zero charm.

by mackenzie90 1 week ago

Which is crazy since we KNOW Craig can be charming. Knives Out was an amazing performance for him.

by gaston50 1 week ago

I agree that his role as Benoit Blanc was his best performance, IMO. Don't get me wrong, I like the Craig Bonds, but he does lack some light-hearted charm that other bonds had. The Craig bonds started with a heavier tone in Casino Royal.

by mackenzie90 1 week ago

At least Quantum of Solace was during the writers' strike, and he himself had to do a ton of writing, which is fine if you sign up for it, but not if it's just thrust upon you.

by mackenzie90 1 week ago

Craig era Bond is #1. Next question.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Casino Royale is a great film. The last couple weren't too bad either, but Spectre was just terrible. The worst Bond film of the whole lot. Spectre Skyfall

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Watching people play poker (badly) for an hour was pretty dull.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I think Quantum of Solace was the worst, I still don't understand the plot of that one. Casino Royale is the best of the Craig era though, agreed

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Oh yeah, I forgot about that one. Totally inconsequential!

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Spectre was the only Bond film I've ever turned off half way through it was so full of itself and self aware and boring as hell
