The Bering Strait is your biggest obstacle: There are two reported cases of successful ice crossings. The first was in 1998 when a Russian father and his son attempted walking to Alaska. They became marooned on the pack ice and spent many days drifting and cut off from shore. The ice finally reached the far side of the Strait. The men, on the brink of death staggered onto American soil. More recently in 2006 English trekker, Karl Bushby, and his American companion Dimitri Kieffer succeeded in doing the reverse route. The duo were immediately detained by the Federal Security Service and deported for entering the country illegally.

For a fair bit of the year, you could pick almost anywhere on Russia's Northern coast and walk into Canada. Not saying it would be a pleasant trip; it's a long way, way below freezing and the sun never rises. But it's possible, in the sense that there's something to walk on all the way.

Why did they try to do that? The people trying to go to America I can understand somewhat. But even so this was in 1998 before Russia was under Putin. And in any case long after they could have easily claimed asylum just off of wanting to escape from communism since the USSR no longer existed. And people trying to break into Russia? Why would anyone want to go there?

I don't think it's about walking into Russia, more for the purpose of saying you managed to walk between two continents
by hermannhollis1 week ago
In that case might be easier to walk from Europe to Asia
by Initial_Style1 week ago
If we go by tectonic plates, in Iceland you can go from Europe to America strolling while eating an ice cream.

Probably for fun. Same reason people climb Everest.
by Anonymous1 week ago
You should totally do it.

essentially, you start in south africa, go all the way up to egypt, cross to jordan and head up to the very east of russia. at certain times you can cross the iron curtain by foot when it freezes over. then it's an (almost) straight shot down through north and south america
by Anonymous1 week ago
Bering Strait, not iron curtain. But yes you are correct.
by Anonymous1 week ago
yay!!!
by Anonymous1 week ago
What do you think the "iron curtain" is?
by Anonymous1 week ago
A curtain made of iron?
by Anonymous1 week ago
I am pretty sure he means the "ice curtain"
by Anonymous1 week ago
i forgor the name its the thing they fly thru in stranger things
by Anonymous1 week ago
Lmao
by Anonymous1 week ago
The "iron curtain" isn't referring to a geographical location, but the array of anti-air defenses and missiles around the then-USSR that create "an iron curtain" when activated.
by Anonymous1 week ago
No, the Iron Curtain was more a geo-political term describing the separation of the East and West in the Cold War. It was not an anti-aircraft defense line.

Huh, I have been misinformed by family. My mistake.
by Anonymous1 week ago
Perhaps they conflated it with the Israeli anti-missile Iron Dome system?

As per Wikipedia, "The border became known as the "Ice Curtain". That's what confused them probably.

Darien gap is also ridiculously difficult to traverse, not saying it's impossible but probably one of the most difficult parts of the journey
by Anonymous1 week ago
And as if that wasn't enough, there's also no roads or pathways for a 100 miles

Curious to see that Egypt jordna border

There is no way for a human to cross from Panama into Colombia. Acknowledges humans use it as smuggling route.
by Additional_Can28011 week ago
That's why they qualified it with "geographically."
by Anonymous1 week ago
this exactly.
by Anonymous1 week ago
People cross that area every day. It takes about 10 days on foot and you need a guide. Documentaries about the Darian gap talk about it. It is interesting to watch on YouTube.
