Bread and circuses. Nevermind religion, sports/tv are the opium of the masses. There would be billionaire heads on pikes and blood in the streets if they were to go away. All in all, a tremendous ROI in placating much of the populace.

I dislike sports for the most part. Doesn't mean I don't respect the guys putting their bodies on the line, but I know it doesn't mean much to my life because they don't pay my bills or rent.
