+131 It doesn't make sense when people attack religion. Religious people believe that it is the way to salvation, but athiests don't believe in any of that. So, why in the world would they care if other people are religious or not? amirite?

Maybe it's because there are laws people are making that are based on religion. Or because some schools are trying to force religion into the classroom, or because some people get harassed for not being religious. Religion affects everyone, regardless if they believe in it or not. You are truly blinded by the facts of the world around you if you can't see that.

I can kind of understand arguing some Church rules, but it doesn't make sense when they say things like "You shouldn't believe in God because its stupid. Its just a waste of time." Its none of their business and my believeing in God is not affecting their lives negatively at all.

The reason that people attack religion is because it causes harm (gays/lesbians, prostitution, the spread of aids in africa, wars, death of some children that had parents who decided to pray instead of taking them to the doctor, it can also stop the progress of science [look at the dark ages] ect.) If these didn't exist then religion probably wouldn't be attacked.

I'm not talking about attacking a church as an institution, I'm talking about people saying that believing in God is stupid and telling people they are dumb for believing in God.

Why not attack those specific harmful acts instead of a whole religion? Religion doesn't always do bad things; a large number of humanitarian organizations are religious.

Yes, but you shouldn't have to be religious to go out and help people, you should do it because it's a nice thing to do.

You don't have to be religious to help people, but it definitely is a motivation for many people.

Because the good things attributed to religion could easily be here without religion (charities and humanitarian organizations) and the bad things wouldn't (violent extremists, discrimination).

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Not necessarily. Both of those things would have likely existed without religion, just not with so many extremes.

Religious discrimination and killings wouldn't exist without religion. I'm not sure what you're trying to say.

Religious violence and discrimination wouldn't exist, but violence and discrimination still would. Just like religious based charities wouldn't exist, but charities still would exist.
