+520 Car companies could easily prevent millions of accidents by adding breathalizers to their cars that keep the engine from starting if the reading is too high, amirite?

Some people who get DUI's have something like this installed in their cars. They have to pass a breathalyzer every time they want to start their car.

Very clever.

its called ignition interlock. like sara24 said if you get a DUI you can get ignition interlock or be put on scram which is a Alcohol Montoring Device that goes on your ankle and collects data from your sweat to show whether you have been drinking or not.

Oh hey you're righ... Oh wait no there's some giant flaws in that plan. Like that people who had just used mouth wash wouldn't be able to start their cars. Or the fact that some people produce positive readings even if they haven't drunk alcohol for weeks. Those things aren't 100% effective and until they are they shouldn't be in control of our cars

1. They already have theses! 2. They just have another person breath into it for the the machine can't tell! 3. Most of the above comments covered the rest of the flaws!

I meant one that monitors the air around you, somehow, so that no matter what, whoever is in the drivers seat will not be able to drive drunk.

You stole this from scrubs!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's an amazing idea, and you're right, but a car like that would not market well. People who frequently drink and drive would not buy the car, or they would disable it. And I'd also predict that there would be an underground market specialized to disable it for you. So it would have to be an international law (since the automobile industry is mostly an overseas trade). Also, the car would have to be designed to compensate with an emergency situation. Because, say a person named Bob was drinking the night away at home with his wife, but then people break in and set the house to flames. Bob and his wife have also been beat mercilessly but they are still alive. They both manage to escape the engulfed house, and the people who broke in have fled. Neither of them have their cell phones, their car is their only way to get help. But they've been drinking, so what now?

The emergency button calls the police

And they also get to drive away lol

I'm not saying I don't agree or that I don't want people to be saved but the car companies would make less money then because less people would need new cars.
