+415 Its not exactly smart for singers to smoke. I mean, I know they like it and all, but it ruins their lives more than it would ruin the average person's, because they make money off their lungs and throat, so even before they die they loose all their money. amirite?

.. it's not exactly smart for anybody to smoke..

Did you completely skip the second part? Singers make their living off of their voice, if they lose their voice, even if they don't end up with lung cancer, then their lives are ruined. Especially if they don't have a full education

That's when auto-tune comes in...

Unless they're a rapper in which case their voice would become deeper and probably sound more ghetto-like.

Singers don't "loose all their money" whenever their voice sucks. They have to actually spend the money, and the superstars have made enough money to retire by the time they're 30.

Meh, a lot of singers have "smoky" voices... if you're actually talented and don't have really expensive habits, there's no reason to find your life "destroyed" even if you did have to stop performing. I'm not defending smoking really, I think cigarettes suck, but this isn't the best argument against them.

Prolonged smoking makes your body need less oxygen to function. One of the hardest parts of singing is needing to take a breath in the middle of an awesome note. Smoking cuts down that need to breath and supports that note. Technically. It's still bad though I guess.

Tom Waits wouldn't have his signature voice without years of tobacco and alcohol abuse. This is a personal preference, rather than something I would advice people to do, but I love singers with the raspy, damaged, gritty voices.
