+795 Student: When am I going to use this formula in real life? Teacher: Well when you're living in your nice house and you get a carpet installed, you'll need to measure the square feet!... In other words, you will never need to use the formula, because measuring the room is the carpet guy's job, and he most likely has a calculator, amirite?

Physics is applied mathematics. We use these formulas to figure how things work. Engineers are those who develop devices that serve as solutions to practical problems by applying mathematics, scientific knowledge and ingenuity. But who cares when these guys: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/79/Dampfturbine_Montage01.jpg Kills someone when a Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider which collides heavy ions such as gold ions and polarized protons doesn't function correctly.
