This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Do you know how difficult it would be to go to a restaurant and have 12 different waiters that speak 12 different languages? I honestly don't give a shit what language they speak or where they're from, but I don't want Asian boy that can speak 6 different languages but not English serving me at a restaurant.

Speak whatever language you want, but it's gonna be a HELL of a lot easier for you and everyone you have to associate with who doesn't speak your language if you learn english.

Ok. Then I'm going to move to France and not bother learning to speak French. Let's see how well that goes over.

I really don't fucking care, as long as I can briefly understand them, I'm fine.

This is 'Murica. We speak 'Murican

I sort of agree. Sure anyone can walk down the street muttering to themselves in whatever language they please; that's freedom of speech. But, if they are going to have a job here they should be required to speak English as the majority of the population, even those from other countries, speaks English.

Also, why does this only apply to America? By your reasoning, anyone should be able to go live in another country and speak whatever language they want. Why only America though?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Maybe i'm wrong, but it could be because the US doesn't have an official language.

English is still the de facto official language. Although there is no official language at the federal level, over 3/4 of the population claim it as the main language and nearly 100% claim to speak it well.
