Apparently, they dye the fruit orange because it looks ripe, so fruit after the color.

no, they were originally orange. they just dye them orangier. they pick them when they're not ripe, so their green and then they dye them. but they can also grow naturally to be orange. orange's were named after the l'orange family, and then the colour came from that.
