He won because he was more diverse and clever. He won because he was charming and talented in other ways that Archuleta was. He won because of his stage presence and his twists on songs. The aim of the show isn't just to find the best singer anymore, but the best ARTIST. & David Cook WAS that.

Same reason it seems to be Twilight vs. Harry Potter, Justin Bieber vs. world, Nickelback vs. world, Charlie Sheen vs. prostitutes. And, God, football! If there were ever insane fans, it's football fans!
