+777 It's stupid how anti-war people hate on soldiers. I understand that you're against the wars, and I happen to agree with you, but you should be angry with the people who started them instead of the people who serve in them, amirite?

If you'll allow me to play devil's advocate for amount... Is it really that stupid to 'hate on' people who volunteer to do actions I find morally reprehensible? I'm sure they had their reasons for joining, and had good intentions, but you know what they say about the paving on the road to hell. At the end of the day these people chose to fight in a war. Sure I'm more angry at the leaders, but the soldiers are far from innocent.

how could you say that? without them the terrorist people could still be bombing us a ton, hundreds of thousands more people would have died and the ENTIRE middle east would be overran. I'm not pro war either but come on they joined to protect us. you could be dead without them jackass.

You make a good point. I should point out I'm not sure where I actually stand on this issue, but I figure I'll take the anti-soldier option for the purposes of a debate as no one else is likely to. But to rebut you, you make some pretty bold claims about what could be without our soldiers. I would say that the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have done little to prevent attacks like 9/11 from reoccurring. The truly dedicated and well-funded terrorists that attempt these large-scale attacks can simply move to a different country or area and rebuild. I would argue that the best way to stop future terrorist attacks is to increase border security in the short term and reach out to muslim countries in the long term. Of course I have no stats to back up any of this, but neither do you so I guess its not important.

I also wanted to clarify your position, you say you are not pro-war. Do you believe that the invasion of Iraq was wrong? If so, what of the soldiers who chose to take part in it? These soldiers chose to take part in something that I find morally wrong and I do not think they deserve to be supported, even idolised as heroes for doing so. Are they brave? sure. Are they self-sacrificing? absolutely. I admire these qualities in them, but I cannot support what they are doing, and I don't think this makes me an idiot or a jackass.

You sir, are one of the most level headed, calmly speaking gentlemen I've met on this site. Your point I have taken into consideration :)

My grandpa was DRAFTED into the Vietnam war. He was FORCED to fight. Yet people still "boo"-ed him as he was getting off the plane coming home.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That is unfortunate, the vietnam war was soooo fucked up though. I am sure this post was more from a modern standpoint anyway, cus they know a lot of people didnt really have an option back then-esp. a strapping young man. My german teacher enlisted then so he wouldnt have to go to nam and see crazy battle (he went to germany lol) but yeah if you got drafted it was straight to nam. People still called him a baby killer though. And even though he got booed (that is horrible given the awfulness he probly experienced) at least he did make it home safely from that hell hole

War is very simple; kill the enemy before he kills us. It's been like that for thousands of years now. If all of you who disagreed would rather have people like the taliban and al qaeda running around, fine with me. You would deserve it. Oh and my grandpa was drafted (forced to fight) in WWII. He didn't have a choice.

It's mindsets like that that make war so commonplace. And I'm sorry for your grandpa, the draft was an awful system.

if you don't want to stand behind the troops around the world, feel free to stand in front of them.
