+264 i can't believe there are shows like Bravo's Work of Art: you can't judge art, a soul's expression. amirite?

Theoretically you can judge art. What people consider art now, is something that will sell for a lot of money. Because if someone were to put googly eyes on a potatoe and call it art..... it's not really art.

but what if i considered it art and was willing to pay a lot of money for it? potatoes with googly eyes can be pretty cute, after all

I actually adore that show, but I think you're right. Like, the episode when they had to make a book cover. I hated that book cover they chose. Sometimes, I don't think they know what appeals to people outside of themselves, because different things do it for different people. Abdi is my favorite. <3

Yea, I love the show too. I didn't like the book cover they chose either. I liked the Dracula one by Mark I think. I like Miles + Nicole on the show, such a cute couple, haha...

I know! Miles and Nicole are like perfect for each other. I hope they hook up. The Dracula cover was one of my favourites, too.

I love that show! Miles is amazing and it really isn't hard to judge art. Some of it is just BAD

It's the same with the multitude of fashion shows, and cooking shows, etc. Art is art to different people. I feel like something is art if the artist says it is art, but it can still not be very good. There are people whose job it is to critique art; it's just like anything else in that respect, it can be good and bad.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yeah. i feel the same way about those fashion shows. any shows where an individual's expression is judged. people have different perceptions of beauty, ugliness. it isn't hard for the individual to judge art, but bias is inevitable. art is pretty hard to define, i'd even say that art can be absolutely anything. it really is all in one's perception...thus, how can we judge it? by doing so, it's as though we assume our opinion is THE opinion

Usually, a critique of art is not whether it's "good" or "bad", but whether it works in conveying an emotion, or whatever it was the artists wanted to show. That's why, when someone critiques art or fashion, it's not the easiest thing. Critiquing art and fashion is about looking for meaning behind the piece, not whether or not it's pretty; the artist will always have a meaning behind the piece, only sometimes it's more visible and easier to understand.

yep, you're right. i missed the point, i realize that critiques are about conveying a certain emotion. i guess i just enjoy the ambiguity in art...it means something to one person, an entirely different concept to another. art is a personal thing. it reaches deep inside of you. if it doesn't do that for a person, or the majority of people, then so be it. what counts, in my book, is if one person can see the magic in that piece. and someone out there always can, without a doubt. thus, pieces can't be judged by an individual, as if he or she is speaking for everybody.

That's why, with these shows, there is usually a pretty sturdy idea around the creation of the pieces. In one, they had to make a book cover, which obviously meant they had to go very commercial and mainstream, and that's what the critiques looked for in those pieces; how well the everyday person would be able to relate t it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

well, i didn't like that challenge. i like the idea of it, but that's just it: they were looking for the mainstream. however, i understand that, for jobs in the art field, there are often limits on the creativity/individuality one is allowed to project in his or her pieces. meh. also, i didn't agree with the judges choices and decisions on which were the worst/best. i had a completely different opinion than them, sometimes. but that's just it, isn't it? each of the judges and i...we're separate individuals, with separate ideas and perspectives.

The judges were looking for the most mainstream, but at the same time, a mainstream "eccentric" so that it didn't look like every other cover. They wanted a cover that appealed to the most amount of people, but still had an artistic edge.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's exactly what I thought about the show! I don't think you can judge art, tell an artist they're wrong, etc.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Art can be judged when it doesn't have any soul in it, but you still have a point.
