You have to post interesting stuff and perhaps pictures of yourself in order to get thousands of followers. I only follow 35 but have around 1500 followers.

i have 1009 followers, i have been using tumblr for aroung 6 months. compared to the others i think i'm really slow to gain followers-_- i use tumblrplug and search for the tag "vote" or "botw" and i'll vote for them in polls for an exchange of a promo. i guess those are the only methods? some people use tumblr train but people will unfollow you after you follow them, and i heard that there is no way to get off the tumblr train. tumblr famous like pitchblackglow and blackpitchglow or smth like that gain hundreds of followers each day. maybe the number of followers depends on the type of things we post. mine is a nature/fashion/gif/disney blog, it is a general blog i guess? I have also noticed that some blogs filled up with Supreme, sex, weed, parties, hip hop gain more followers as those posts are more mainstream on tumblr. i hope they just disappear sometimes lol they are annoying lol
