+754 The greeks had superior language skills. We only have one word for "love", but they had three. Eros: romantic love, Phileo: brotherly love, and Agape: Pure, unselfish, sacrificial love. Perfect love. The world needs more agape and phileo, and less eros. amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Japanese has 2 :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I know Ai, what's the other one?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Its Koi, for passionate love.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

hm. I like that :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Oh and Koi can become Ai with time. Or so the Japanese dramas tell me.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Whats Ai?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Ai is equivalent to Agape.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You gotta be careful not to confuse Agape with Eros.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Romantic love means sexually?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

basically I think it's just another word for lust. But I am not sure.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah, thought it would be something like that.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Not exactly. Romance isn't strictly lust, it's more like(this is the only example that comes to mind) What Edward supposedly feels for Bella in the first book. It's no where near perfect, and unselfish, but it's not just lust. I think it's more like when we love the idea of being in love. Lust is definately involved, however.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Oh okay. Thanks :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Phileo FTW.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

French has 3 also. Aime is like brotherly, amore is romantic, and kiffe is lustful

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Ha. Evene Eros is slowly being lost; because the "love" we have nowadays is pretty much just biological, it's not even love anymore...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I do agree that the linguistics are better, but I don't think we need less eros, why would we need that?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Theres acctually more then 3, just to let you know.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

COOL! What are they (:

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I've heard of: ludus: children & casual lovers pragma: long-term (married) couples storge: siblings/comrades mania: obsession Not sure if any of those are correct, but those are the ones I've heard of. Never heard of phileo out of the ones you listed.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'd say Mania definitaley makes sense.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

There are lots of types of love in every language... in english we only have one word for "love", because we describe it with ADJECTIVES. There's nothing more or less advanced about that

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I agree that yes, we do need more of brotherly love and "perfect" love. But without romantic love, I believe "perfect" love cannot come without it to begin with. So, I can neither agree or disagree.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm pretty certain a person can have agape love for another person without loving that person romantically in the first place.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well, when religious people describe their relationship with their god, they say God has "pure, unselfish" love. I'm pretty sure God doesn't feel romantic, when it comes to his people.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

well, i believe there's a difference between eros and selfish obsession that people mistake for eros

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Wasn't Eros was the greek god of love?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

that was aphrodite

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Eros is another name for cupid, her son, though.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

actually Eros was the god of love and Aphrodite was the goddess of love

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Aphrodite was the goddess of beauty

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I wish I could vote "yeah you are" 37 times. lol

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Why 37? That's kind of a random number...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

There's a difference between lust and romantic love. Lust is purely biological and it can be done without any emotional connnection between the people.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I know there is one language (I am sorry I forgot the name of it :( ) that has 11 different words for different types of love

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Ok I seriously just think I found my new favorite quote.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

haha thanks :)
