Stop signs are used to regulate traffic. If there is no traffic, what's the point in stopping? amirite?

I don't drive and haven't paid much attention to what a lot of signs mean, so do you always have to stop at a stop sign no matter what?
I know I should know, so I am learning :)

follow the chain of potential events - you don't stop this time because there's no traffic, or the next time or the time after, pretty soon you start to feel complacent because the last 100 times you passed that sign there was no traffic, that's when you just stop thinking about it and just go go go. When you get to 150 times you're so confident in not having the need to stop that you just plough through every time without even thinking. Finally you have that accident that might kill you and others. Does stopping still seem like a totally unnecessary thing to you? The road rules are there for a reason. They're meant not to be broken, for a reason. Hindsight won't serve you well when you're in a jail cell for reckless driving.
