Voldemort comes from the French word "to fly from death". Admit it, JK Rowling is a genius. amirite?
by Anonymous13 years ago
Of course she is. Erised is desire spelled backwards and the phrase on the mirror is something along the lines of 'I show you not your face but your heart's desire'. She is an amazing author, although I am angry that she went on a killing spree near the end of the series.

It can also mean "Thief of death" referring to him killing so many people, because he "stole" their lives.
by Anonymous14 years ago
If he was a thief of death he'd be stealing their deaths, not their lives.
by Anonymous13 years ago
Or it could be because he's stealing from death by trying to make himself immortal

Putting thought into character names doesn't make you a genius.
by Anonymous13 years ago
the thing is that she had to think of names like that a hole series in advance I mean She didn't just invent a random name it fit with Tom Marvalo riddle and all Almost all names have Representative meanings
by Anonymous13 years ago
Actually Izzie, in my opinion, the more representative names there are in a series, the less realistic it seems. I mean, you're trying to create a believable world as an author, right? Names come first in one's life, so what are the odds that all the things linked with their names would happen to them?
For example - What are the odds that Voldemort's parents would have named him something that rearranges into Voldemort, and then have him turn out as psychopath who flees from death?
by Anonymous13 years ago
They wouldnt have. Him mum samed him after his dad and her dad. He would have rearranged it himself to choose a name.
by Anonymous13 years ago
Ok, so what are the odds that her parents and his dad would have those specific names? And that doesn't factor in the chances of him becoming a murdering psychopath.
by Anonymous13 years ago
No matter what his name was he would have changed it because he hated his parentage and it wouldn't be that hard to make it an anagram of something else.
by Anonymous13 years ago
See, that'd be slightly more realistic than already being conveniantly named Tom Marvalo Riddle.
by Anonymous13 years ago
Actionman.. Oops I didn't realize that I wrote that badly until I got on my computer this morning sorry I don't normally write like that
by Anonymous13 years ago
If his name was anything else, he'd turn it into an anagram of something else, just so he wouldn't keep his parents name, then no matter what you'd be saying his name is conveniently @@@.

Practically every fiction writing does this. She's not a genius, she just knows how to manipulate her readers.

OMG MINERVA MCGONNAGAL MINERVA IS ATHENA'S BEST FRIEND THE OWL AND MCGONNAGAL SOUNDS LIKE MCDONALD'S
by Anonymous13 years ago
It's three French words, and the actual translation is 'flight of death.'
You're right, I'm the first amirite user in history badass enough to correct an error in a post.
by Anonymous13 years ago
Don't put words in my mouth!
by Anonymous13 years ago
There is no word "to fly from death" in french, it's just three words "vol" (flight/theft) "de" (from/of) "mort" (death) squished into one name. I know it's what you meant, but your wording bothered me.

Rowling had a fascination with names and she put incredible thought into each one. Like Dumbledore means Bumblebee because he is always humming to himself, and the entire Black family is named after stars. Delores Umbridge also come from words meaning pain and insult. It doesn't show that she is the best author ever, but goes a long way to show how deep the series and her writing are.
