+329 It's stupid that "Christian" is a sub-genre of music. Genres should be based solely on the type of music it is, not what it's about, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

actually, christian isn't really a genre at all. you can have christian metal, christian rock, etc.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

those are sub-genres

by Anonymous 14 years ago

No, they're types of music, sub-genres are different.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

Rock and metal are types of music...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i think thats what the anon was trying to say, that rock and metal are the genres and Christian is just the sub genre

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No, that's the opposite of what anonymous was trying to say

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No, that's what I was saying. Rock and Metal are GENRES christian merely implies that the lyrics are about the religion. thus meaning that christian is technically a sub-genre. Yay logic!!!!!!!!

Well it's so you can differentiate between Rock and Christian Rock. If you're atheist and your friend suggests a band to you, all you know is that it is rock music and it turns out all the songs are about Jesus are you going to be happy? If brand is labled Christian Rock you know to politely decline.

Not all bands that are labeled Christian are that straight forward that they're talking about god, though. I'm an atheist and I love the band Underoath, which happens to be Christian metal.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

But what about the ones that are?

by Anonymous 14 years ago

If they want to label it as Christian, that's fine. But it shouldn't be a genre.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

It's a sub genre. It's Rock first, Christian second.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

I know that...it shouldn't be. The band can make itself known as a Christian band if that's what it is, but there shouldn't be a whole sub-genre dedicated to it because genres are supposed to describe the type of music a band is, not what its lyrics say.

Genre: a. A category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, marked by a distinctive style, form, or content according to http://www.thefreedictionary.com/genre. I think Christian Rock fits here. It's like saying you can't have the science fiction genre of books. Science is the content and sub genre. Fiction is the larger genre.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

I'm talking specifically about music, though. "Christian" is the only sub-genre of music that describes what the music is about.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

a lot of times though, Christian rock bands don't even write about Jesus or God. Usually their lyrics are just positive messages. So they aren't labeled that specifically because they write about Jesus. It's also because the members are all Christian and their music is upbeat and positive. There are so many bands that you would be surprised are Christian because they dont actually sing about God.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Gangster rap. You're wrong.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Just because a band is labeled as "Christian Rock" doesn't mean I have to interpret their music that way.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm just using Rock and Christian Rock as examples.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

There is no "official" genre called Christian. Like a few people before have said, it's a way to differentiate genres by content. It's the same way people call some music "Emo".

by Anonymous 13 years ago

when in reality none of the bands they ever talk about are actually emo. People do the same thing with screamo.
