+363 When you're older, -have your own house. your own kids. your own life- , you're not going to read a book, then write a report on it and relate it to your personal life. So why do we do it now, amirite?

To exercize your brain and thinking is one good reason. I always thought posts like these are basically saying "why must we be forced to be educated?" I do hate it when you don't have the freedom to choose your own book, though.

Am I the only one around who actually enjoys book reports? I mean, it gives you an excuse to take time out of your day just to read. Also, it is especially fun when the teacher has never read the book you chose.

No... anyone who takes actual courses in college enjoys them. Book reports are some of the easiest things that I have to do.

How often are you gonna burn magnesium or use Pythagoras' theorem? You'd be surprised how many jobs have a report-writing/critical-thinking/analytical-writing element though.

Learning about the Pythagorean Theorem was my favorite part in Math. I love it. haha

Gee, I don't know. Maybe some of us would actually like to grow up to be well-rounded, intellectual people.

I'm sorry, I read what you said, but can't understand it. Maybe it's because I didn't get the point of connecting the words written on a page to some context. I hope I'm not missing anything important, I REALLY wish I'd learned to not only read but comprehend words. Why didn't I ever have to write book reports or make connections? Maybe it's because I am one of those kids that caused kids in Ontario, Canada to have to take literacy tests because so many students could read but not understand what they read.

You mean like in the old days when everyone farmed and racists were everywhere and we had slaves and we would inbreed right?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Some people may want to be critics when they are older, so you do it when you are younger in case someone likes doing it.

mstarmach is right. Basically every job needs critical reading/thinking. Unless you want a job where you don't make any decisions for yourself.
