+220 It's "try to," not "try and." If you really think about it, "try and" makes no sense. "I'm going to try and learn French!" Two separate actions? You're going to try, and you're also going to learn French? No. You mean to say "I'm going to try to learn French!" There are too many posts containing this error. amirite?

Who would even say "No Way" to this? It's completely correct...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm gonna try and rid myself of this habit.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

But they are different actions. Trying to learn French is different from learning French, because just trying doesn't mean you succeeded. The act of trying is different from the act of learning. You learn because you tried, but you tried and you succeeded. You tried, and you learned. You're going to try, and you're going to learn.

I only say it; force of habit, but I say both. Ima try and learn french, ima try TO learn french??

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah a lot of the time I say things like that because it's hard to use perfect grammar when speaking, but when I'm typing I take the extra few seconds to make sure I'm not making an error:)

Yea me too, I really dont care how I spell in these kind of websites but in school I check and recheck cuz the teacher will take away anything:/

...Who really gives a fuck? Oh no it's the Grammar Nazis, all the Grammar Jews needs to try and hide...

Have fun being stupid. If you're going to do something, might as well do it right.

Learn to use the reply button. Now you can go wallow in your ignorance and be poor and a failure at life.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah, because someone that doesn't use a website exactly the way you do is ignorant.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No, actually, the reply button makes it clear who you're referring to and almost everyone on this website uses it. You are ignorant because you reject proper grammar, not because you don't use the website properly. The reply button is there for a reason, sweetie:) Besides, people won't know you are replying to them if you don't use the reply button, hun. God, I have to spell everything out for you!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You knew perfectly well she was replying to you, so they WILL know who you're talking to...

Jeez you're quite the asshole aren't you. Was two whole years ago, but still. Passive aggressive use of endearing terms does not make you sound witty it makes you a condescending asshole.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

But who really cares?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Eh, language develops.

"Try to" definitely needs to be standard usage. Still, there are some cases in which I just like the sound of "try and." Tolkien's writing, mostly--his editors tried to change all instances to the proper form, but he wanted to keep "try and" and I just love how idiosyncratic that is.

lol idc it's the internet, I'm not all that worried about grammar.
