You have to find which ways work best for you. The more often you encounter a word, the quicker you'll learn it. You are more likely to remember a word you learnt in a story than a word you learnt in a vocab list, because the story makes sense, and remembering it will help you recalling the words. The best may be to actually use these words. Try to translate to the foreign language the random phrases that pop in your head during the day. It demands dedication and a few dictionary lookups, but I think it works.
