+314 Even if you haven't read all of the books, you'll realize all of the similarities of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. The ring is totally a Horcrux. amirite?

LOTR came before Harry Potter, so it'd be the Horcrux is totally the ring.

No. The Ring in LOTR is not similar at all to the horcruxes in Harry Potter. If you're trying to parallel LOTR to a newer series, the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini is much closer.

The locket Horcrux could definitely be taken to be an allusion to LOTR. It affects the emotions of whoever wears it. The Inheritance Cycle is a blatant ripoff of elements from LOTR, Star Wars, and other series.

all the horcruxes messed with you. remember the diary? it wasnt shown for the other ones to mess with u emotionally, but at the same time, im pretty sure its safe to say that we can make this assumption.

they are totally different and LOTR came first. just saying.

I've read all the books of both series. I will admit some similarities, but I don't think horcruxes are blatantly related to the ring. They do affect your mood, but the magic behind the two objects is completely different. Both objects do involve the main bad guy/are influenced by him, but I don't think JK Rowling intended any strong connection between the two. I did read LOTR in 5th grade though, so I probably have forgotten a lot of it by now.

To all you saying it isn't similar: Has a mind of its own: Check Brings out the worst in almost anyone who comes into contact with it: Check Powerful: Check Near impossible to destroy: Check Harms some people, whilst strengthening others (Umbridge/Sauron): Check And the greatest points of similarities: Contains a piece of its creator: Check Creator able to manifest physically in this world as long as it is intact: Check But, yeah, other than that, no similarities at all

Ha, exactly, I was going to say that the Horcruxes were forged by Sauron in the fires of Mt. Doom.
