+690 WASHINGTON is a state, WASHINGTON D.C. is a city, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It all makes sense now

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Americans...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

What /I/ personally don't get is why isn't Washington D.C. IN Washington State? Would that not be most logical?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

probably, but it was put where it is because of some compromise between alexander hamilton and thomas jefferson involving hamilton's financial plan or something.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Washington D.C. is NOT a city. It's a district. It was made a district and not a city or state so states couldn't fight over it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

XD first of all, nice name, and yes i agree with you

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I rule.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

my rectum

by Anonymous 13 years ago

D.C. technically isn't a city, even though it's city-sized. I just sat "D.C." for one and "Washington state" for the other so there's no way for someone to get confused.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah, I thought everyone knew this. I thought this post would become one of the lowest-rated, but I guess not.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It seemed so obvious to me at first that I thought there must be some joke that I wasn't getting so I thought about it some more and remembered what the "D" stands for. I usually think of it as a city too. Do you live in DC?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

who dissagreed with this?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Because D.C. technically isn't a city but a district.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

by Anonymous 13 years ago

"It is called District of Columbia, because it was built on land of the Territory of Columbia, a 10 square mile piece of land, that used to be part of Virginia and Maryland. The territory of Columbia was named such after Christopher Columbus" -http://www.dchomepage.net/dchomepage/dcfacts.htm Well, there you go.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Washington D.C. is not a city. It's a district.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's a district. I'm really upset not more people realize this. It was chosen to be a district because our leaders didn't want our nation's capital to specifically be a part of any state, so it's a whole different entity. I mean come on now people.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Please read the above comments. People have already said what you said, and I've already responded.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Thank you. (: It's really annoying when you say, "Oh, I'm from Washington." and they're like, "I went there last summer!" I don't like having to clarify "state".

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Same here, but its worse when they ask you where Washington is. -.-

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Right?! Ugh. Don't move to the East Coast, because they just automatically think it's D.C.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

actually, I just learned this myself, Washington is a city in Illinois. Small, but it's their.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

you win

by Anonymous 13 years ago

D.C. Stands for District of Colombia. So, it is a district, but it is also a city. And I hate it when people don't get it. I'll say, "I was just up in Washington seeing some relatives." Almost every time the response is, "D.C. or state?" If I was talking about D.C. I would have said D.C.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

First of all, I disagree with your name, and second of all I always thought as a little kid that D.C. stood for "Da Capitol", but at least it helped me remember the difference between the state and the district/city

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I acutally do like chocolate cake, so don't fret about that part. Haha, thats a good way to remember the difference

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I live by Seattle and if I say "Oh, I'm from Washington." then they start yammering on about the White House or something. It's incredibly annoying.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I go to school in DC...live in Maryland...or Capital Hill depends on how I feel that day.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's a district. Both Virginia and Maryland gave up land to make it. It's a district because they felt it wouldn't be right for it to be in any one state.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yes

by Anonymous 13 years ago

D.C. is not technically a city, it's a district: hence, District of Columbia.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I live in DC and my relatives from Mexico refer to it as just Washington. It really bothers me though haha x)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Lol u know how they have state quarters right, well I got a quarter and on it it said District of Columbia, and IT said washington DC or sumthing but it wasn't a normal quarter... then i lost it

by Anonymous 13 years ago

A lot of you commenters aren't very knowledgeable, are you? DC is a district; District of Columbia. WASHINGTON, DC, however, is a city. Just like Seattle, Washington is a city. So the wording of the poster is actually correct. Also, just a little piece of history, Washington State was originally to be named Columbia, but execs were told that the national capitol would be named District of Columbia, and the two may be confused, so we opted for Washington instead. As it were, the only city within DC became known as Washington, and the two are often mixed up anyway. So there's your answer to many previous comments.
