+476 It's really stupid when someone loves to do something but won't pursue it in college, because he/she doesn't think there's enough money in it, amirite?

But there sometimes isn't money in it.

It's not stupid. It makes sense. If that happens to me, I'll do something I can make alot of money from. Then I'll retire and pursue whatever I was wanting to do in the first place.

Definitely not stupid, it's called practical.

I like playing video games and eating Cheetos, but if I didn't learn how to do something else, I would be on the streets, unable to play video games and eat Cheetos.

I don't think you should let money influence what you want to do. I hear translating doesn't pay well, but it's what I want to do, so I'll do it. Teaching doesn't pay well, but they're are people who want to be teachers because it's what they love doing.

I see your point, but a teacher is a fairly realistic thing to become (not a knock on teachers, just that if you do the 4 years in college, lots of teaching jobs are available). But say, if someone loves writing or playing an instrument, careers in those fields are much more scarce. So it might be better to pursue a more practical career.

I have to disagree. I love cooking and would love to become a chef. But where I live, theres no money in it unless you can get into some of the high end hotels and restaurants which won't happen until you have a few years of experience. I'd rather have a job that supports me then have my dream job and always worry about money, or going back home for money.

My dad loves to write, but I'm glad he never chose to become a writer because he would never have made any money. That's mostly because he isn't very good...

I agree, because you can always make money teaching it if that's your last resort to make money. Like if you like art, you can teach at an art school and make plenty of money but still have time to do art.

I'm choosing my job out of practicality (librarian instead of writer, but I know that writers rarely get big, so... but I have a friend who is really talented and pretty, but she is going into medical studies instead of Music/Broadway!

its not stupid, its realistic. nobody wants to be a starving artist who literally is starving.

God, I know what you mean. I love history but I don't want to become a teacher and that's as far as you can take it. Sigh....

Growing up with money troubles, I would definitely go into a more lucrative career so I never have to worry about money. Even if I don't love what I'm doing, I will be living the lifestyle I dreamed of while my refrigerator was empty.

That's not stupid.
