"Plane crash in Pakistan. 132 dead, including 2 Americans". Isn't it annoying how American media sources seem to view catastrophes based on how many Americans are in them? Pakistanis and others are just as important, amirite?
It's not being vain, it's letting people know about their countrymen. And like stacilovesyou said, so that if people know someone in that area, they could know to check on their loved ones. I'm sad when I hear of a disaster, but I'd naturally be sadder knowing that my best friend's mom or my uncle died in it.
Oh sorry, I didn't mean to imply that I actually knew people in this particular plane crash. But most of my family lives in India, and my best friend's mom & sister just moved to Malaysia so I didn't just pull that out of my ass haha.
Well if it's the AMERICAN news it's not going to give you a breakdown of which nationalities were involved; it tells you the facts and then makes it relevant to your country.
That doesn't mean that the other countries aren't as important, but since the news is being broadcasted in America, obviously they're going to highlight the Americans that were on the plane because the were from our country.
I live in Canada and they do that here too! The news will mention an accident somewhere and the reporter will say "We haven't heard yet if there were any Canadians injured in this accident" (or something like that)
I think the main reason they do it is because people may have family on vacation there so they are thinking "oh no, could my family member be there?!"
But yeah, during the Haiti earthquake they kept on saying "So far we haven't heard of any Canadians who have been killed in this" And they would always update on how many Canadians we hurt!
If that report was in America, it matters.
If it was in Canada, I'm sure they'd mention "- Canadians injured" or something, or in Mexico, "- Mexicans injured"
Catch my drift?
If that report was in, say, France and they mentioned Americans, it would be very irritating.
Ok people, don't you see anything wrong with this? I'm not against saying that Americans were killed. BUT If no Americans were in the crash, American media wouldn't even care! And neither would some of you! That is my point
The thing is, there are a near-infinite terrible things that happen every day in the world. We (as humans) simply don't have the mental capacity to handle every tragedy, so we filter out things that aren't important to us to cope. Everyone does it. Not saying that it's right or noble; it's just neccessary.
ustudent's right. Besides, there's so much crap happening in the world, a lot of which involves us, and some of which, we can't help in the first place, it wouldn't make sense to broadcast everything that ever happens, ever.
You're right about that, but it would still receive coverage if there were no Americans in the crash. You said the American media wouldn't care, but that's not really true
OK, the reason that they reported the 2 Americans, is because we are in...America. Honestly, people don't care unless it directly effects them. If it said this, 132 people dead in plane crash, no Americans would care. Including myself. Unless it is something very serious like a foreign diplomat, or something.
why should i care about a bunch of people that died in another country ya its sad but im more worried about whats going on in my country im a lot more sad when an american dies
(Samantha+Jane): At least our insults aren't oxymorons. Republicans are the elitist jackasses. They refuse to let people below the poverty line receive health coverage because "tha liens r 2 loooong." They listen to Fox News like it's a decent news source and buy that whole "fair and balanced" crap.
Why can't Fox be an acceptable source? Because it's conservative? People are allowed to have their own views, and I think just one conservative station out of all the other liberal ones is fine. And gee, thanks for proving that you're willing to accept those with different world views~ love, an "elitist jackass".
P.S. Just because Samantha+Jane is being a jerk doesn't mean all conservatives think and act like that.

best friend's mom or uncle? I really hope these people live in Pakistan, otherwise your choices for random-loved ones are a little sketch.
Oh sorry, I didn't mean to imply that I actually knew people in this particular plane crash. But most of my family lives in India, and my best friend's mom & sister just moved to Malaysia so I didn't just pull that out of my ass haha.
awhh man, thats alot of people :/

The general American population doesn't choose the titles of their news stories...

yeah! like right now im thinking if any of my family has gotten hurt because they live in pakistan D:
Let's put it this way. "Plane crash in Pakistan. 132 dead including your entire family." Matters now doesn't it?
JESUSUSER CHRSITST IS YOU SERIOUS!?!?! MY FAMALAMALY>!?!
If that report was in America, it matters.

Yeah, that's the first thing I thought when I saw that!
152*
I literally was JUST thinking that last night.

You're right...I wouldn't. America needs to take care of America right now.
I get what you're saying, ustudent and fangirl. but a tragedy that kills 152 people does not happen everyday
You're right about that, but it would still receive coverage if there were no Americans in the crash. You said the American media wouldn't care, but that's not really true
Well its a little true. It would still get some attention, but not much.
cont. You'd just care differently. Because no matter how nice you are, you don't care as much about a stranger dying as someone you might know.

you def read this on yahoo news
why should i care about a bunch of people that died in another country ya its sad but im more worried about whats going on in my country im a lot more sad when an american dies
You didn't even have to say that to prove your an over-patriotic, uneducated southern fool, because you spell so terribly...
You didn't even have to say that you're an elitist, jackass liberal because you leap to conclusions so quickly...

Comment is win.
Fuck Pakistan. America is the only place that matters
Home of the uneducated, who blame their financial problems on Mexicans. Somewhat like Hitlor/Nazi Germany did with the Jews, no?
Don't forget to mention how some of us actually believe the Fox News "fair and balanced" crap.
