+429 Dear Movie Director, The Book is like a pre-made script. Stick to the book, it's pretty simple. amirite?

God forbid a director take artistic liberties with the storyline, and people like you bitch about how "awful" the movie was compared to the book. If the movie followed the exact same plot as the book all the time, the movie industry would be boring and monotonous.

No. When the book says you have to light every character on fire for an hour, you do it.

I agree that it's stupid when they change things that affect the story or the characters somehow, but making changes is necessary to adjust to the new medium. You can't get everything in the book to flow smoothly into a movie with it's limited time and way of telling a story to an audience. It's a different form, it has to be changed. If it doesn't hurt the characters, or the message, or the plot, it's fine. Like when people were mad about Hermione having a pink dress instead of a blue one in Goblet of Fire. Big whoop. Or in The Hunger Games, they changed something about Katniss' Mockingjay pin, an important device in the story. But you know what? Katniss got the pin from Madge in the book, a character who's background cannot be shown in a movie without being awkward and who isn't important enough to really need in the rest of the story. Was it better in the book? Yeah. But if they tried to keep Madge in the movie she'd basically show up, they'd have maybe a sentence explaining her, and then she'd never show up again. Yeah, that wouldn't be unnecessary or anything.

Ever noticed how movies say, "Based on the book by —"? It doesn't have to follow it exactly, books and movies are usually not able to cross-over..

Just think about how long movies would be if every movie that is based on a book were exactly like the book.
