The name was chosen by game designer Shigeru Miyamoto as a combination of the word "Kong", since the movie King Kong had caused it 'to colloquially mean monkey' in Japan. According to Snopes, Donkey was chosen because Miyamoto intended it "to convey a sense of stubbornness." But Toad is the name of the Mushroom people as a whole, not a particular individual, they are collectively known as Toads, so it is not about names as in a given name, Peach is called Peach but she is a Human. Somebody already answered that Toadstool is a type of Mushroom, so that must be the reason, since Princess Peach and her father, King Mushroom, have Toadstool as their family name.

I want to know why people only focus on the names. I mean, the whole concept of Mario is that some fat plumber runs around a huge rainbow world with evil turtles and living mushrooms, while eating other kinds of mushrooms and "Fire Flowers" All while a super evil turtle kidnaps the fat plumbers hot girlfriend, and tries to kill the plumber. But somehow the plumber manages to kill the turtle with an axe, and save the hot girlfriend. And of course there's always the thing about shooting flames out of his hands, and doubling his size and stuff.

I believe Princess Peach isn`t Mario`s girlfriend. She is the princess of the Mushroom kingdom who is repeatedly kidnapped by Bowser, and Mario keeps rescuing her. I actually think it was ever stated in the Mario games` history that they are a couple. Only good friends The reason Bowser keeps kidnapping Princess Peach is that the Koopa kingdom, of which Bowser is the king, is a long time enemy of the Mushroom kingdom, in fact the Toads, the mushroom population of the Mushroom kingdom, were humans, but were turned into mushrooms and bricks and other objects by Bowser`s magic, and King Toadstool (aka Mushroom King) and Princess Peach are the only ones who have power to undo the spell. So Bowser keeps attacking them to prevent her from undoing his spell. This in canon lore [IMAGE:103964]
