+431 How come if one of your parents is Caucasian and the other is African American, you're generally considered black, almost never considered white, and rarely considered as just both (i.e. Obama)? amirite?

How come people call white Caucasian and black African American? There are white people in Africa, and Africa is by no means the only place that black people come from. And where the fuck is Caucasia anyway?

A Black American of African ancestry.

What about Black Americans whose ancestors, if you trace back far enough, are from one of the other 200 countries Black people could be from? Why are they still "African American"?

Perhaps they are not, and calling them so would be a misnomer. However, that would be a flaw in our perception of the definition and not of the definition itself. Quite frankly, I just say Black and White. It's clear what I mean by those terms.

Because a person's experience with race is mostly determined by their appearance alone. If Obama's skin color is dark enough for him to be discriminated against by racists, then he's had a black experience, not a half-white experience.

My mom's mixed, my dad's Black. So I'm something like 75% black and 25% white. I generally just call myself Black, even though I'm pretty light skinned. It's just easier and avoids needless explanation. It's especially useful when I'm filling out college applications due to affirmative action and whatnot. I'll just say that I'm all black, even if the option to tick off more than one race is available. Is it dishonest? Maybe a little. But I damn sure need as much help as I can get.

My Mom is white and my dad is black but I have a Mexican skin tone so the only way people know Im black is by my hair. Never have I been discriminated against..

I kinda have that problem. I'm half white and half native american but I look more native than white and it pisses me off when people assume I'm full native and they also assume that because I am native I know everything about the traditions and stuff. I was actually raised white.

I think it dates back to after the Civil War, with the one drop rule. If you had one drop of Black blood, you were considered Black. That's just my guess though.

My friends call me a mutt because my dad is black and my mom is white.
