+115 Religion causes greatly more problems than it solves, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Religion isn't the problem. PEOPLE are the problem

by Anonymous 13 years ago

People created religion Ergo religion is the problem

People who's actions are justified and influenced by their religion.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Differences create a lot more problems than they solve. Let's get rid of all of them instead of trying to be better people.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Let the religious debates begin!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Anyone who disagrees, let's think back to one of the most ridiculous things ever: The Crusades.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Anyone who thinks that religion is the problem instead of hateful or wrongdoing people, let's look at a nonreligious person who caused the death of 20+ million people: Stalin. Yeah, religion is the reason for "problems", not people being bad. Right.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Let me put it this way: If there were no religion, would things like the Crusades have ever happened? No. There's enough in this world for people to disagree on, and religion is just fueling the fire.

So, we should no longer have differences in opinions or beliefs because they might lead to problems? We should no longer allow people to practice their religions, or have any freedom, because it'll lead to problems? Even though ANY difference can lead to discrimination? Okay people, let's get rid of all the differences in humanity, race, sex, nationality, political stances, religion, music preferences, because it'll lead to problems. No, let's not try to learn to accept each other because it's definitely feasible for everyone on the planet to become so similar that there will never be any friction.

People are bad because their religion tells them to. They use their religion to justify murder, rape, and other atrocities.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

They also use societal pressures to justify that. It's an excuse and not the actual cause. So, if I kill someone because they're a libertarian and I'm a fascist (any two different political parties, really), it's the political differences that caused it, not me being a messed up individual?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Those are too different to compare. Religious people generally kill people of other religions not just because they're different, but because God wants them to kill them. They feel that their actions are justified and even encouraged by their faith. The Libertarian party doesn't tell you to kill people of other parties.

Most religions tell you not to kill other people. They are extremists, some motivated by political differences, hiding behind religion. So I shouldn't be allowed to practice my religion, my religion that teaches love, and not murder, because some people are crazy? Because some people who are chemically imbalanced do bad things, in the name of religion, religion is bad? Religion is an excuse, not a cause. So is race a cause? People kill(ed) other people for being a different race. They believe that they are superior and that it is justified. They're doing the same thing: finding a reason to kill others. Does race cause more problems than it solves? Should we get rid of that? And I know this is likely to come up so I'll address it: but you can't get rid of race, you can get rid of religion. False. You cannot control other people's beliefs. Religion is a red herring, unless of course, it teaches hatred or murder.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm not getting into this. And yes, race causes racism. So do stupidity and narrow mindedness. That doesn't change the fact that if there were no race, there would be no racism. The same as if there were no religion, there would be no religious conflict (Ireland, Palestine/Israel, the crusades, 9/11, massacre of Christian Armenians in the early 1900's)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No, race is the excuse. Differences are the excuses. If it weren't race or religion or gender it would be some other thing. If there were no differences in humans, maybe we wouldn't have any intolerance, or maybe it would end up like the episode from Fairly Oddparents, and maybe we would make up another reason.

First, God doesn't want anyone to kill anyone. Murder is a sin, and there is a Commandment against it. God's message is to love all even if they are a sinner. Those who kill in the name of God may be doing what they "think" God wants them to, but they are not practicing correct religion. Religion isn't the only thing that drives people to atrocities. Someone could be a racist atheist and try to support things like ethnic cleansing/mass murder using social Darwinism or something. Hitler wasn't a Christian when he took over Germany and implemented the Final Solution. No one is sure he was an atheist, though, but still. You just need to be a messed up person or be practicing messed up religion.

Hitler was Catholic.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Not while he was occupying Germany. Earlier in his life he was, but he had basically renounced Christianity by the early 40s.

I think the crusades were more about taking land than wiping out non-believers.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

i know this is an opinion site, but blatantly posting somewhere you know there are religious people just makes this little chain of fire caused by you.. i feel as if these arguments would not be taking place if you hadn't blamed us Christians for the problems in the first place.

I feel like religion is a double-edged sword. On the plus, it can give people incredible faith. I've seen this faith used to promote generosity and good deeds -- and sometimes, faith is all that someone has. Faith has saved many people from giving in to the weight of the world. On the negative, it sparks differences and arguments. People have also done awful things in the name of their religion, and sometimes people conform to religion in an such an extremist way that their ability to think for themselves and live by their own morals is clouded. ...I'm not religious, by the way. This is just based on my own observations. But I feel like that in the end, it's the individual who makes their own decisions, regardless of their religion.
