Definition of camera: equipment for taking photographs (usually consisting of a lightproof box with a lens at one end and light-sensitive film at the other)

Cameras were originally made TO take pictures, as people above me have kindly pointed out.

.....Because ALL cameras take pictures....I mean fucking DUH. Did you actually tax that little brain of yours thinking about this?

Because they're called cameras.

It would just be redundant to say picture camera..
