For the same reason many people pray to a higher power in times of need, but forget him/her when things get better. People use it to comfort themselves when things are rough. Convincing yourself that there's a reason for your pain can easily help you feel better about it. When things get better, people usually don't require comfort, so that's why some people don't claim everything is for a reason/turn to God once the bad times are done.
