Nah, Hermione was a flawed character. She definitely had to learn that bravery and courage were more important than books and intelligence. She has insecurities and flaws that stand out but it makes her more lovable and you can relate to her more, she's not even supposed to be totally gorgeous in the books. She's short, has bushy hair and overly large teeth. Bella Swan (Cullen) was a total Mary Sue. Perfect looks, perfect boyfriend (even if he was creepy). Sure she was clumsy and a disgrace to females for being so idiotic when Edward left her but she has no personality or anything. She's also described as a plain Jane in terms of looks but ALL guys want her and want to be with her, which doesn't make sense. It's like Stephanie Meyer thinks Bella can do no wrong. Which is why she's such a Mary Sue and Edward is a Gary Stu.

She's described as a Plain Jane so that any girl can imagine themselves as her, and boost their self confidence by thinking that if a girl that's just like them can get a guy like that, they can too. It's a nice thought to have, but it doesn't make anything any less ridiculous. Edit: By "anything", I mean anything in the series that is ridiculous. Which is most of it.

well yeah but girls will never meet a vampire and fall in love. she could have made the character more interesting, or characters actually. i cannot stand edward. he is a pompous ass.

She wasn't trying to make them believe they could meet a vampire and fall in love. It's supposed to be a love story moreso than a vampire and such story, so she tried to make Edward all perfect and Bella just plain so that any girl can believe that they can find love in someone so perfect. But I do agree, the characters suck for the most part. She just has no writing skill. Although, I give her an a for effort because she thought up some of the weirdest shit.

Gosh I hate Mary-Sues too. Bella is just ONE example, their are others like Max from Maximum Ride. I can't stand neither of them, they are so unrealistic its ridiculous.
