Well, I don't want to create a run-on sentence!

Dude you're texting, not writing an essay! I always use colons and semi-colons when I'm writing and I even use them all the time while on the internet, but not while texting. Who cares; (see i just used it) as long as your friend knows what you mean and the sentence makes sense, then it's okay. And when is it ever really necessary to use semi/colons when you're texting? I use them loads of times when I'm on the internet or writing, but why while texting? I do use comas and periods when I'm texting of course, even though using them isn't really that important if it's just a small sentence, but seriously, semi-colons?

Why are you preaching this to me? It was a comment, not an invitation for a lot of writing about why writing a lot is bad. If you must know, I always use a lot of words. It's just my writing style. I mean, when I'm quickly texting some, ex. asking what time s/he'll be somewhere, I'll say, "What time are you coming?". But usually, my conversations with my friends aren't that depthless. If my friend asks me my opinion of her new boyfriend I'm not going to say, "You can do way better!" Or if it's my only chance to talk to my parents for the whole week while I'm at sleepaway camp, I'll want to say a bit more than "Miss you guys! xxoo". But let me just apologize for not realizing that using semi-colons in a text message was some sort of unforgivable crime.

Stereotypes: they are true 90% of the time; this isn't one of them.

tl;dr, when i want to express i didn't read something; lists, in between items containing internal punctuation; short form for 'colon'; linking closely related independent clauses not conjoined with a coordinating conjunction. Just the usual.

What about frowny faces?

No offense amiriters, you're awesome and all, but you should really text more :/ Colons and semi-colons aren't really that important in texting. As I said earlier, I use them all the time on the internet and while writing, and maybe even when I'm on the internet on my phone, but not while texting. You're not really writing an essay; no one's really going to care if it's a run-on sentence or if it's wrong, just as long as it makes sense and your friend knows what you mean.

I used a semi-colon after "essay", see? cool Eh, I'm probably going to get down voted, and come to think of it Idk why I was too butt-hurt over it lol. D: I may have used them before while texting of course, it's not like I never did, and it's not like I'm saying that it's wrong, I'm just saying it's not really necessary. But it's okay if you do. Eh, whatever, text however you want I guess.
