Because the majority of the populace are mindless sheep who buy whatever name they know without comparing. Sometimes big names really *are* better, but usually there's something cheaper that's just as good.

That may be true but then there most also be cheaper products of a disatisfactional qualtiy, and many people don't want to sift through the rubble.

"Sift through the rubble" is a very bad illustration of your point. "Dig through the garbage" would have been much better. Also, it's not really a lot of effort, and especially if it means not wasting money. Even if money isn't tight, virtually throwing it away through ignorance is ill-advised.
