Its actually more convenient than you would think. You don't use it to hold up your phone while you make a call, at least I don't. I, personally, use it when I'm using the speaker function when playing music, and when typing something from my phone onto my computer, for whatever reason.

i know deaf people that use the kickstand so that they can talk. they set the phone down so that they can sign without having to hold the phone.

My friend uses his to watch videos on his phone. So it's propped up on its own. It's actually really handy.

If we're talking about some average phone only meant for texting then yes, but on a smartphone it makes perfect sense. I don't know about other people, but I use my phone for all my music listening. You'd be surprised how convenient a kickstand can be. Also keep in mind that some people use emulators on these phones. A Gameboy game might be fine, bit when you're using something like a Nintendo 64 emulator you're going to want to use a controller, and try using a controller and holding a phone at the same time. (SPOILERS: It's a pain in the ass.)

Some phones have the speaker on the back so it would be good for listening to music or watching videos

Kickstand: a stand you put down by simply kicking it. I would love to watch someone do that!

It is convenient as well when you are in a group of people shoeing them a video and then you prop it up in the middle and everyone can just huddle up and watch.
