For some reason some girls think that looking like a carrot or oompa loompa is attractive to guys. All I know is dancing is a lot less fun when you have to worry about her face staining your shirt.

When I was in highschool the getting dressed up part wasn't about the guy. It was fun to get together with my girls and do each others hair and makeup and nails etc. These days I'm a professional beautician, so maybe that's why it was fun for me. But I think its just the girly fun thing to do.

I agree with other people. It isn't JUST to impress the guy. It's fun, and can help you feel good about yourself. You rarely get to dress up like that, so it feels special. If you wore normal stuff it woldn't be the same.
