+237 The burning of the Qur'an is taking the freedom of speech too far, amirite?

Old current event's post is old.

No, that why it's called freedom of speech bro/girl. I see my friends leave to fight and die for that right, I want every aspect of it, even if I don't exactly agree with how people use it. And Adam's right, old news.

First of all, bro is non-gender specific, so there was no need to write "bro/girl." Secondly, since you are proponent of not limiting freedom of speech, do you condone the actions of the Westboro Baptist Church?

Sorry, too many assholes on here that say "I'm not a bro". And I didn't say I agreed with it, but that doesn't mean we're takin it too far? Did they physically hurt anyone? Is anyone directly at a complete loss? I'll take Thomas Jefferson's route, "It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my bones to know that my neighbor worships 20 gods, or no god." It doesn't bother me. It's freedom of speech. What if a group of people got offended everytime someone said the word "they"? It sounds stupid, but just what if? I can name about a million people that don't get offended. I can name even more that don't get hurt everytime someone says the word "they". So we should put restrictions on it just because someone doesn't like it? Where the fuck is the freedom of speech in that? Same principles apply with expression, the guy was voicing what he thought was right, and if you know he's wrong, then too bad for him. Don't make him and everyone else lose rights cause of it.

Placing a restriction on freedom of speech, such as making it illegal to protest private funerals, isn't going to cause a flood of extreme anti-freedom laws. They would only place necessary limits on the freedom of speech.

Why do you need limits? The worst thing coming out of standard restrictions (I don't mean the whole "fire in a theatre" example, I understand those restrictions) such as racism, is just offending people, including funeral protests. I don't exactly support what they do, but why take away their rights just because you don't support it? That isn't American, and it's the reason we left England: because we had restrictions on speech, protest, and religion just because other people didn't agree with our founding fathers.

I think the big thing in this country right now is "just because you can dosen't mean you should, such as in the case of protesting at the funerals of gay military members. It's like 'really guys, do you have a brain, these people died to keep you alive'. Now in the instance of the Qur'an: how would people react if they where burning Bibles? would it be made such a bid deal. And the guy was protesting the mosqu that was being renovated to a 14 story super mosque a block from Ground Zero. You would be able to see it from Ground Zero. He didn't actually end up burning them but he made his point: If you wan't to do stupid things in the name of freedom of speach, I'll do stupid things in the name of freedom of speach.

I am all for freedom and being allowed to live without Big Brother breathing down your neck BUT I feel the burning of any symbol is just a bad protest. It is disrespectful and of low intelligence. It simply copies an old protest and holds litttle meaning asides antaganising the opposition. Have a little flair and stop copying other real old tactics. Even a protest should be tasteful.
