Its actually pretty amazing how phones work. We dont even really take notice that 100 years ago sending messages from one small device to another, talking to people halfway around the world would seem impossible, amirite?

The telephone has been around for about 140 years and so have telegraph machines capable of transmitting messages across oceans. But I get what you're getting at.
