+250 Dancing isn't a sport--it's an art form, amirite?

At my school it just wastes a lot of money. The dancers have like 10 different uniforms. They suck but still go on trips constantly. They serve practiclly no part in anything at school. They are in our concerts but we never see them play but you see the band, strings, chorus, and even visual arts perform. At least the cheerleaders serve the purpose of being something for pervs who can't find anything better to look at. Granted that is all the cheerleaders do because the band is what really makes our audience cheer.

The Olympics doesn't recognize it as a sport. They tried one year, as sort of a trial type thing, and held a dance competition with some of the best dancers in the world, gave out medals, the whole shabang. And then they were like LOLNO, this can't be a sport, srrry for wasting your time!

Which is lame for them to do because floor gymnasts do those stupid ribbon dances where they flail around, rolling on the floor, and swirling some ribbons. That's close enough to dance to warrant that as an Olympic sport.

I read the second part in Ronald Weasly's voice. Anybody else? No? Just me? Okay:(

I say its both. It is an art form, but it can be done in a competitive setting-it doesnt HAVE to be the olympics-there are dance competitions all over. Not to mention you have to be agile and fit.

I agree, I think it's a sport when doing it competitively, but otherwise it's just an art form.

Well, you can have art competitions too. Doesn't mean drawing is a sport. I think dance is an athletic hobby/art.

I think the whole contraversey between "So and so is a sport but this and that aren't" is the fact that people associate sports being something you can PLAY. For instance, the majority would probably say things like baseball, soccer, tennis, football as sports because they can be played [ignore the fact that they're all played with balls hehe], but few would think outside the box and say swimming, dance, cheerleading, etc.

you must not be a dancer... I've been in dance for twelve years and i am one of the most physically fit people at my school. Our conditioning alone is a workout and then we have a few hours of practice. I can see how some types of dance may not seem hard, but if they are done correctly, then they should be extremely challenging.

I'm a dancer too. Yeah I'm fit, and yeah my competition team is fit too. We work out really hard, its lots of exersize, and we practice a lot. This post, or any of the comments, aren't saying its not hard, they are saying its not a sport. That's not an insult or saying we're not any good, they are saying we don't always have points and scoring and stuff like that.

If you consider physically challenging things to be sports, then I'm going to consider myself an athlete when I get out of bed in the morning.
