It's not really that annoying that atheists celebrate Christmas and Easter. People are perfectly free to celebrate them in a non-religious way, amirite?

I'm also an Atheist and celebrate christmas, but not Jesus's birth. Ever since I was a child, I enjoyed the warm fuzzy feeling you got inside whenever christmas rolled around, the togetherness of your family and friends. That's what I celebrate, not the birth of Jesus Christ. Besides, Christmas started out as a pagan/wicken (not sure) holiday anyways. I honestly could care less if I got presents, I just want to listen to christmas music on the radio, watch a christmas movie, wrap up in a blanket, drink hot chocolate and watch it snow. That, to me, is what christmas is all about.

Let me tell you what Christmas is about...

It's about getting presents and giving them to people, and receiving presents in return and seeing your family. Fuck the "being nice" shit, we all just want presents and see our family and friends.

Who the FUCK gives TWO SHITS if I decide to celebrate Christmas? I can celebrate any damn thing I want to. I can celebrate the destruction of the twin towers and Hitler killing the Jews for all I care (I don't but I'm making a point). Why? 'Cause I live in America, and I dunno about your countries, but in the United States of America, you can celebrate any goddamn fucking thing you'd like.

If you're annoyed by it, FUCK OFF. You're annoying twats if you give a damn. All this sentimental shit about "NO! IT'S OUR HOLIDAY!!" No, it's not your holiday. Actually, there were more celebrations around the day of our Christmas before the whole "LOLJESUS" shit. So shut up, because you stole Christmas from the goddamn Jews, anyways.

And you seem like somebody I could agree with well on.

Halloween used to be religious, but now just about anyone can celebrate it.

I'm atheist and I celebrate christmas. I think of it as a day to hang out and celebrate my family. :/ I hate when people make a big deal out of it, it's really not that bad lol.

it's annoying when you're not allowed to use the word "christmas tree" because you might offend someone.

@Lkun it's annoying when you're not allowed to use the word "christmas tree" because you might offend someone.

Since when are you not allowed to say 'Christmas tree'? Or 'Merry Christmas'? All holiday season I hear every store cashier, teacher, basically anyone who might celebrate Christmas say "Have a merry Christmas", and everyone talks about getting and decorating their Christmas tree.

at my little sister's school, they are not allowed to say christmas tree because it has the word "Christ" in it. They must say "friendship tree." To me, that's messed up.

It's not illegal or anything, but you will notice a lot of places saying the more inclusive "happy holidays" even when they specifically mean Christmas. And Lowe's Home Improvement sells "holiday trees"... 'cause you know, Hannukah and Kwanza are all about some trees too.

Offend people, then. Really, what other holidays do we go out and buy trees to decorate?

I need to go dig out my old "Offend someone, say 'Merry Christmas' " shirt.

Christmas was originally a pagan holiday.

Research shows that Jesus was actually born in... March, I think it was?

lecornergirls avatar lecornergirl Yeah You Are +8Reply

I'm atheist and celebrate christmas and easter. I do christmas for the family and gift exchanging and I do Easter because I like hunting for candy/money filled eggs :)

Anonymous +8Reply

Yeah. Like i have nothing against the parties and family and gifts, but my family always goes to church Christmas Eve. It's fine to celebrate but just don't forget the true meaning.

I just don't get why they only celebrate Christmas and Easter. Why do people only celebrate Christian holidays if they aren't Christian? No one celebrates Hannakuh if they're not Jewish.
The annoying part about non-christians celebrating Christmas is that now, everything about christmas is made "politically correct", like tv specials say the true meaning of Christmas is family or something. No, it's not. It's Jesus. What's the point of making a religious holiday politically correct?

"Why do people only celebrate Christian holidays if they aren't Christian?" I'll bet you that an atheist with a jewish background celebrates hannakuh not christmas. It's just that usually you won't have an entire family of atheist so you wouldn't be able to solve it by making an "atheist-holiday", it would just get too complicated. Besides, if it is hypocritical for atheists to celebrate christmas than it's equally hypocritical for christians to celebrate halloween.

A lot fo them don't. And Halloween is part of the reason I don't love the idea of non-christians celebrating Christmas and Easter. Halloween is celebrated by so many non-pagans it's almost completely lost any religious context whatsoever and has almost no meaning. I don't want the same thing to happen with celebrations of God.

fangirl12s avatar fangirl12 Yeah You Are -4Reply
@Rene_Magritte So you don't celebrate halloween?

I used to, but now I won't practice any of the traditions. If a really good friend has a Halloween party or somethng, I'd go but I wouldn't say happy halloween, do decorations, tell horror stories, or dress up or trick or treat.

Well, at least you're not a hypocrite on that area, that's more than what most others who critisise atheists celebrating christmas can truthfully say. I just think that if you can actually "get annoyed" over something like that it's only because you're looking for something to get annoyed by.

Well, it just annoys me when I go online and everyone complains about christians all the time and then they celebrate Christmas and Easter. I'm glad people don't commercialize Easter as much, because it's way more important than Christmas is. I'm afraid of something I strongly believe in and love becomming something people celebrate just because they can and then forgetting the true meaning.

I stand by my statement. I'd also like to add that atheism has very little (or nothing) to do with people forgetting what the holidays originally meant. It's all because of consumerism and making it more appealing to kids.

Well, my family doesn't have any religious holiday to celebrate during the holidays. So, we just celebrate Christmas. It's not really that big of a deal.

Rainbowss avatar Rainbows Yeah You Are +3Reply

I celebrate X-mas, a non-religious Christmas in my mind.
It's a day for sharing presents and showing how much you love each other.

And Easter is the same. c:

Why is there so much worship anyway? You all do it weekly, why is there a need for Christmas in Christianity? I've got no problem with the beliefs particularly, but the way it's practiced all seems like it would be a bit egotistical on the part of God and Jesus.

Anonymous +3Reply

Yeah I agree. It's easier just to celebrate with your family and have fun and let everyone else figure it out for themselves.

My atheist friend's mom confronted her about this. Her mom didn't want to buy her presents because she's an atheist. She said "I believe in Santa but I don't believe in Jesus!" Terrible. But funny. I'm so going to Hell xD

giraffesarecools avatar giraffesarecool Yeah You Are +1Reply

Christmas was technically a Pagan celebration...
Considering Jesus was born in like October lol

Anonymous +1Reply

I suppose if you believe in Santa and the Easter bunny go ahead and celebrate! :D I celebrate it for Jesus, because I am Christian. Really though, I have heard that Rudolph the red nosed reindeer and other aspects of these holidays were made up by advertisers to buy their products (lawn decorations, ect.) But still, if you believe in Santa and his reindeer celebrate all you want! :):)

Anonymous +1Reply

To try and convert people and teach people about love family and sharing then deny others to celebrate on days similar to older holidays from before your crusades is hypocritical, not an atheist celebrating another year passing with a new year and christmas so they get a holiday for friends and a holiday for family.

Only thing i think is annoying is when you get for example the Islamic right wings in western countries who whine about political correctness and make it happy hoildays not merry christmas yada yada yada but still take the time off or the overtime pay.

Anonymous +1Reply

Funny thing is, a lot of pagan holidays were replaced by Christian holidays to make it easier for people to convert and many of the holidays still have pagan rituals in them, but the bible won't tell you about them. However, history books will.

Christians complain about their precious holidays being ruined by atheist and others but in fact the holidays weren't even theirs to begin with.

So, how about letting everyone enjoy the holidays for whatever reason they want to celebrate them for.

Anonymous +1Reply

Yeah. But I totally think it's perfectly okay for like Half-Jewish families to celebrate Christmas and stuff. Like if someone in your family is Christian or if you at least believe in God. Also they have Hannukah which I think is really a very nice holiday.

@Abc123__ Yeah. But I totally think it's perfectly okay for like Half-Jewish families to celebrate Christmas and stuff. Like...

If you believe it's true, celebrate it. If you don't, then make your own holiday or something. Lol.

@Abc123__ If you believe it's true, celebrate it. If you don't, then make your own holiday or something. Lol.

Haha I wish it worked that way, But we should just enjoy celebrating it and let other people do whatever they do.

Now that i've moved out of my parents house I dont celebrate easter. I dont really celebrate xmas either. i buy gifts for my friends and family but i dont go out and party or go to church.

In fact if i knew ppl wouldnt throw a fit over it, i wouldnt even buy presents.

Anonymous 0Reply

Christmas and easter were remnants carried over from when the romans converted to christianity. They were just modified to be christian instead of paganistic. Do some research and you'll find just how much the church decided to carry over.

Anonymous 0Reply

So true, besides, I would feel bad not seeing my christian family and exchanging gifts on Christmas, even though I'm athiest.

It's wrong to celebrate Christian holidays I'd your athiest. It's pretty hypocritical. Like we are going to disagree and make fun of your religion ( which most atheists do) but we want to be a part of your most important day because we like material items and gifts!

You don't get it do you? They do not care about the christ part of christmas they just want to spend time with their families. Athiest are usally very good people. Christians usally have a stick up their butt (Yes, I am christian) and can't see something from anybody else point of veiw. If you took the time to listen to a athiest then you would see that they have a good point.

There were so many holidays that were put around the date of Christmas before Christianity came around.

The whole point of those days is about God and Jesus. If you don't believe in Him and are only celebrating for the party it is just a little hypocritical. That's why some people get upset when atheists do celebrate those days. It's like "I think your religion is dumb until I get presents and candy".

I think it should just be regarded as 2 different holidays, like the Christian Christmas and the Atheists version. But I don't think anything's really going to change that. I think we should just celebrate the birth of Jesus and ignore the people celebrating the presents.

Well actually, Christ didn't die on Christmas nor did he rise from the died on Easter, the Catholic church used those dates to conterfit the pegan holidays that came before. Strangely, it seems like history is repeating itself, ne?
