Actually they were originally made that way to slow typists down. QWERTY is purposely inefficient because they wanted to stop people from typing fast enough to jam up their typewriters. *THE MORE YOU KNOW* Of course, it's a dumb idea, because no matter what the layout is, people will eventually get used to it. The most efficient layout for English is supposedly Dvorak, but I've never tried it. It's supposed to make it so that both hands work equally. With QWERTY I tend to find that the left side of the keyboard gets used more than the right side.
