+476 It pretty much SUCKS when you're not poor enough for Financial Aid but not rich enough to pay out of pocket. amirite?

lemme guess, you are a student and the child of rich parents who feel that you should pay your way on your own... story of my life. I can only afford to be part time.

No, that really sucks though! My Dad would actually pay for my college, but he just can't afford it because my stepmother just had a baby and doesn't work; However I don't qualify for any grants because of his "high income" I'm taking out numerous student loans right now..

wow... c'est la vie. I guess we both have it tough. are you first year?

im on a similar situation. impossible for me to afford to go to a university and i don't wanna get a loan so i just settled in the local community college. then just transfer after a couple of years. saves me a hell of a lot of money.

You know what's worse? Being poor for the first 20 years of your life and having to require that aid.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Not really because you actually GOT the grants and don't have to be buried in debt just to go to college. Now you can move on w/your degree. I'll be paying for it for many years to come..

You had a more privileged childhood. It seems like a reasonable trade off to me.

Not necessarily.

If a kid has to work to support his family and still do well in school, they deserve some sort of financial aid. A middle classed kid could also work to save up for college during that time.

I worked all through high school and it was gone my first year of college just on books and dorm. Try paying $4000 out of pocket for student housing and meal plan that you have to have and $800 for books. That's just what my scholarships didn't cover.

Most likely part time, on minimum wage*

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yep, especially in a small town with not a lot of job options. Even now that I'm living in a big town it's still part time minimum wage.

Word. And Financial Aid gives you just enough money to pay for tution. Kind of leaves you high and dry for things like eating.

i have a bunch of older siblings who went to college before i did, and so now my dad has basically no money for MY college education. but i still don't get any financial aid because they see my dad's income and assume he has the money, even though literally all of it is tied up in student loans and such. my choices for college were very VERY limited.

Colleges just don't understand. Even upper middle class famillies cannot truly afford college. It'd be surprising if really rich people could just pay up front, the amount colleges are charging these days.
