+223 "because the bible says so" is not a good reason, amirite?

by Anonymous 14 years ago

Depends.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

In what cases would it be an acceptable answer?

by Anonymous 14 years ago

In cases where it's actually something the Bible says (and hasn't modified), rather than just an excuse.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

Actually, even then... "It says (this) because it says so" is redundant. >_>;

That's not what I said. I guess what you're really asking is why the Bible is a valid thing to follow? It's the word of God.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

How do you know that it is the word of God, though? I'm not trying to be provocative; it's just I've never heard a good answer to this.

I understand. I admit, it's not like I can say MAN GOD TOLD ME IN A VISION THE BIBLE IS LEGIT. But in my own life of allowing God to step in and transform me, and from finally getting into reading the Bible in the past month or so, and seeing how the Bible is so connected with itself no human could've devised it, I am pretty sure it's from God. I'm not sure of the whole reason why the Catholic Church chose the canon and what became the Apochrypha, and if their decisions were really led by God or not. I'm interested in reading the "left out" books. In some weeks my pastor will be speaking a bit, I think, on the subject of where the Bible really came from and why we trust it, so that should be interesting. I know it's hard for someone who DOESN'T trust the Bible to see why it should be trusted. It's kind of like if I gave you a novel and told you to decide if I had written it. You'd be at a loss. But if you knew me very well, you might be able to tell.

As I become more familiar with God himself, I become more certain in my decision that he is the author of the Bible.

Well that's an interesting and respectable position. :) I've never heard it like that before, actually. I think that you underestimate the power of human potential, though. There have been more ambitious projects in history than the Bible, so it's possible that we are capable of writing something so powerful. Don't get me wrong -- I respect the Bible as being an influential force in Western literature and civilization. However, like any other source, I think we should be skeptical about what it says and how much authority we allow it to have. Galileo put it in an interesting way in this quote: "I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use." I'd like to think that God made us naturally curious and inquisitive for a reason. As for the Bible, I'd say it was written by curious men seeking answers to the questions of their time. We need new answers for /our/ time. :)

I agree with this all completely.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

No... I don't think it is what they're saying. I think they're saying that if you're talking to somebody about something, and they oppose your point with, "Because the bible says so," as their key argument, it's not typically a valid argument.

@78081 (Kylias): well if someone said. "stealing is what god wants us to do" or somthing retarded like that then you could say " um no, one of the ten comandments is not to steal."

by Anonymous 14 years ago

Been posted, but I still agree. ;)

The bible is just a book written by some unknown author who, apparently, doesn't mind writing... a LOT.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

by Anonymous 14 years ago

the writers were not unknown the were prophets and a whole lot of other people
