+199 When people say, "why do I have to press 1 for English in America?" they look like idiots. America has always been a safe-haven for all religions, races, etc... free from discrimination which is why there is no national language. So stop looking like an un-educated asshole and realize that America is a place for freedom of expression. amirite?

"America has always been a safe-haven for all religions, races, etc... free from discrimination" Definitely not true. Early America had terrible discrimination all over the place.

At least it's illegal now.

Whatever can be enforced is enforced. Anything on paper basically. you must have I think a certain percentage of minorities in your employ, and you can't say racist things while sober. I don't live in America, so I'm not sure of the laws, but I know that they do enforce whatever they can.

I understand what you're saying, but America was also founded with English as our language. They picked English versus German. So yeah, it is a free country, but English is the dominant language in most of the world. Would it be so wrong to learn it?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The people OP are referring to - I believe - speak English. They're complaining that they have to pick a language at all and think America is and should remain a completely English-speaking country, even though it never was in the first place.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Man, I wish they choose German instead. That would have been awesome.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

English is not the dominant language in the world, both mandarin and Spanish beat it

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Not in USA if I was in China I would learn totalk with them no matter how hard.

by Anonymous 7 years ago

It's not the dominant one, but it's one of the top three spoken languages. English, Spanish, and Mandarin are the three most useful languages to know.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

English is not dominant no matter what statistics you look at Spanish and mandarin beat it

by Anonymous 11 years ago

How about we all agree the three most spoken languages are English, Mandarin, and Spanish?

One time in eighth grade some Hispanic people were talking in Spanish at their table. The substitute teacher said "If you're going to live in America you need to speak American." The whole class just stared at her, jaws hanging open.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Wow. I would've been like "At least I know two languages and someday, I'll be way more than a substitute teacher like you, ya stupid bitch." That angered me....

by Anonymous 11 years ago

My teacher told some girls that they weren't supposed to speak Spanish because they were supposed to be getting English practice. Honestly though, speak American...? That's just...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

When I was a sophomore in HS a teacher of mine wouldn't allow some hispanic students to speak spanish in her class because she wouldn't know if they were saying something inappropriate or not. They were fine with it but I could never decide whether it was wrong of her or not...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I love that teacher's attitude . See those people could have been planning crimes in Spanish. Not good.

Diversity, god damnit I love America for it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

The opposite of everything you said in this post, would be true.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Is it so hard to press 1 number?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It's almost as hard as pressing two extra keys.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Haha clever!

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Not so hard just wrong in USA when our language is English only other languages should need to press a number. I live right on Canadian boarder so here it should be French as the other choice, absolutely not Spanish

by Anonymous 7 years ago

I find it more irritating that after pressing '1' for english the person I eventually talk to can barely speak it.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I dont get mad at the fact i do have to press one, but companies should just have English as the default language and press one for other languages. This is America, our main language is English.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

If they have buttons for other languages, they need an English button, too, or the "press __ for __" menu will just keep replaying. In this case, English is the default, because it is number 1.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yeah, but they dont have to PRESS a button

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I agree with the dial 1 thing. That makes me so mad. The jerks who want other languages should have to push buttons, not those of us that know what country we are living in.
