I always wondered how all mammals do it - do they just bleed all over the place? My poor puppy needed to wear a diaper before she got spayed.

Actually, humans are just special because we can mate for offspring anytime we want while many other mammals, such as deer, only have a time span of 2-14 days where they are "in heat", and some species don't even bleed.

I think they used rags or something to absorb the blood. Washing those must have been a bitch, though.

My mum said that in her day they had pads that had elastic going around them so that they'd be held up by going around their waist.

yeah my mum said that too and she was a ballet dancer...could you imagine how grose that would be in a leotard and tights!!!

Apparently, you wouldn't be told that you were going to get it until you got it. Imagine how scary your first one would have been back then.

My Godmother grew up in Mozambique, and they didn't tell the girls about it until they got it, and it's a very religious place and when she had her first period she thought it was God punishing her : /

I learned once that they use to have women sit on seats with holes in them until it was over. I in some african tribes, they have the girls sit on tuffs of grass.

that would be torture
