Quite a few sunglasses actually protect your eyes from UV rays that would cause cataracts.

Sunglasses actually trick the eyes into not thinking it's as bright as it is outside, so they don't produce enough melanin (which protects you from UV rays and stuff) so you get sunburnt more and more often
