It pisses me off whenever someone talks about music as if they're the coolest person ever because they listen to it. It's music, it's a personal preference, get the fuck over yourself.

Well it's not //just// "a musical preference", the lyrics kind of match the person's intelligence, or at least depth. For example stupid hoes would listen to "u a stupid hoe" and they would like it, since it's catchy or someshit, but super geniuses will listen to classical or choral pieces and would think about the meaning and emotion behind words/notes. It's not like having a favourite colour, it's a way of expression who you are inside and what you like.

Yes, so a stupid hoe isn't going to like classical music because they aren't going to get it. So, they're probably going to think Nicki Minaj is better than Tchaikovsky or Beethoven. Likewise, the super geniuses will think classical is better than Nicki Minaj. I agree that music is a way of expression. If you like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" because you can relate to it, that's fine. That doesn't make you better than someone that can't relate to it or doesn't like it.

Oh, okay, I got you. My main point with the original comment wasn't the "preference" part (though it could still be a preference, maybe they prefer it because it tells a lot about them), but the "personal" part. Everyone has different music that they like—the reason why is their own—and just because someone listens to something different, that doesn't make them any better or worse.

Disagree completely. All types of music have different things to offer. Whether it's the lyrics, vocals, beat, mood, or whatever, almost anyone can single out what it is they like about a certain genre or song. But that goes for pretty much anything. I like watching serious/thought provoking movies, but that doesn't mean that I won't enjoy a low brow comedy every now and then. I like reading biographies and other nonfiction, but that doesn't mean that I don't sometimes just want a cheesy romance or other easy read. Likewise, I like classical music, but that doesn't mean I don't want to shake my ass to some Nicki Minaj. That's a pretty superficial way to judge intelligence.
