+310 The American continents were named after Amerigo Vespucci. Why the Hell did they name both after his first name and add in "North" and "South" when they could have just made one America and the other Vespuca, amirite?

Because Vespucci sounds Italian (Wait it is) And I guess Portugal didn't want their colonies sounding Italian, same with France and Britian. The Netherlands would of had a say but Britian told them to "GTFO"

This makes SO much sense. Though I think, at the time, they just called them the entire place America, and it was eventually divided into North and South America. I could be wrong, though, so don't take my word for it.

I don't think hell is a proper noun.

Its funny because America got its name from a signature. Like, he drew up maps and he would sign his name in the lower right corner (i believe) just where the continent happened to be. It didnt have a name but people just started calling it that because his nae was there.
