Um, it's actually 'duck' tape. It was used and named that in the war because the soldiers used it to stick over holes in things, ect. E.g. Drink bottles. So that when they crossed rivers and such, the water would run off the tape in the same way water runs off of a ducks feathers. Google it, fool.

That's epic =O I never knew that. I've always called it 'duck' tape, even though I knew it was duct tape. But now I'm gonna tell that to everyone when the subject of duck tape comes up xD

duck tape is a brand of duct tape. The product as a whole is duct tape. It's called duct tape because it was used in the 1970s to repair ducts. Calling it duck tape is like calling all tissues Kleenex, no matter what brand it is. It's duct tape@83878 (meek):

both of you are right. it was originally used in WW1 for waterproofing equipment, but after that it had no more uses so it went off the market. Then decades later someone discovered that is works fairly well for repairing ducts and the name was changed from duck tape to duct tape. But now the brand name for duct tape is duck tape
